Advance Practice Registered Nurse/Supervisor – UMHC/SCCC – CTU – Coral Springs

The University of Miami/UHealth – UMH/SCCC in Deerfield has and exciting opportunity for an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)/CTU Supervisor. The incumbent will be responsible for delivering medical care to a wide variety of patients. The APRN/Supervisor will also examine and treat patients independently and collaborates with other health care professionals. Ensures proper illness and injury management, also disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. May prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests. Advises patients about continuing care. The CTU APRN/Supervisor will work within the oncology service line responsible to execute care in the acute and outpatient care settings. The APRN/CTU Supervisor also promotes and restores patients’ health by developing day-to-day management and long-term planning of the patient care area, directing and developing staff, collaborating with physicians and multi-disciplinary professional staffs, and providing physical and psychological support for patients and their friends and families. This employee enforces professional staff behaviors that facilitate positive relationships among colleagues, physicians, administrators, and other hospital personnel.

APRN Functions:

1.    Provide chemotherapy treatment unit (CTU) coverage as needed, including on-call and cross coverage.
2.    Provides new patient and ongoing teaching to oncology patients.
3.    Collaborates with physicians and other providers regarding the care of a patient receiving treatment in the CTU and in all setting including inpatient.
4.    Assures appropriate medical documentation
5.    Collaborates with pharmacy and nursing staff to optimize quality of care and time of the patients treated at CTU
6.    Refer to support services when needed
7.    Precept or mentor nursing staff and nurse practitioner students/fellows
8.    Provides patient/family education regarding disease processes, treatment options, treatment outcomes, possible complications, medications, discharge planning and lifestyle modification.
9.    Promotes evidence-based nursing practice.
10.    Participate in Unit QI/Research projects

APRN CTU Supervisor Functions:

Clinical Operations Management:

1.    Responsible for the management of the daily processes and operations within the Unit(s), compliance with nursing standards, patient satisfaction, and clinical performance improvement.
2.    Responsible for assuring patient care is delivered in alignment with hospital mission, nursing department goals and objectives, and Joint Commission and regulatory agencies’ standards.
3.    Responsible for ensuring units are adequately staffed and personnel are appropriately trained for their given assignments in order to provide safe, quality care.
4.    Responsible for the utilization and maintenance of appropriate nursing care plans and assure nursing staff is knowledgeable in arranging interdepartmental consults as appropriate to address patient changing needs.
5.    Coordinates with management and Human Resource department the management of personnel including:  recruitment, retention, employee incentive and evaluation, and disciplinary actions.
6.    Provides insight on unit operations to nursing leadership to assist in the development of strategic planning and departmental expansion.
7.    Assists with the development/revision and review of clinical policies and procedures.
8.    Review with Charge Nurse Roles and Responsibilities as needed.
9.    Conduct monthly Rounding with all direct reports and daily rounds with patients and Staff as needed, as well as maintain communication with Site Leader, physicians and interdepartmental stakeholders as needed.
10.    Ensure compliance with patients’ discharge and/or transfer process and emergency management protocols.
11.    Develop processes to ensure availability of nursing equipment and supplies.
12.    Promote professional growth opportunities to improve staff retention.

Financial Management:
1.    Responsible for capital and operational budget planning and budgetary compliance.
2.    Responsible for timely and accurate data collection of patient volumes, unit expenses, unit revenue, performance improvement information, patient satisfaction, and other pertinent information that demonstrates the operations of the unit(s).
3.    Reconciles expense receipts with budget report to ensure accuracy.
4.    Provides timely reports, as requested, on all data collected.
5.    Maintains appropriate records of employee attendance, tardiness, and non-productive time such as sick and vacation time, administrative leave, and Leave of Absence.
6.    Maintains records and systematic management of inventory such as biomedical equipment, capital equipment, supplies, and miscellaneous computer hardware.

Patient and Patient Family Education:
1.    Assures nursing staff assess patient and family educational needs.
2.    Assures staff receives adequate education regarding a variety of disease processes, therapies, new protocols, new drugs and technology adoption.
3.    Assists the staff to utilize and/or adapt teaching protocols to set goals for the individual patient/family teaching plan.
4.    Provides/Reinforces New Patient/New Treatment Teaching.

Staff Competency, Education, and Performance Evaluation:
1.    Assures all staff receive a formal orientation plan and preceptor in coordination with nurse educators and evaluates effectiveness of the clinical orientation.
2.    Assures completion of competency-based assessment documentation and continuously evaluates staff learning needs utilizing competency-based criteria.
3.    Responsible for assuring staff compliance with mandatory education, licensure requirements, yearly hospital-based competencies, and applicable certifications and professional practice standards.
4.    Formally evaluates each staff member yearly. Maintains documentation of job performance, personnel actions, and additional professional contributions to the unit and/or organization.
5.    Assures cross-training to other departments is documented and accurate.
6.    Provides ongoing coaching to all staff with the goal of improving critical thinking and technical skills.

Performance Improvement:
1.    Assists in the development and implementation of performance improvement programs in compliance with JCAHO standards and other regulatory agencies.
2.    Collects data to evaluate patient flow and trends.  Through data collections, identifies changing needs for internal processes, and implements change accordingly.
3.    Collaborates with leadership for processes flow issues external to the nursing unit(s).
4.    Identifies opportunities for improved unit efficiency, patient flow, and customer service.
5.    Investigates clinical and practice variances and conducts follow-up action plans as appropriate.

Committee Participation:

1.    Participates in Nursing Shared Governance Counsels and promote and support staff participation in the Magnet Journey Committees.
2.    Functions as an active member of Performance Improvement teams.
3.    Demonstrates knowledge of the Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement program for the designated unit.  Coordinates unit PI program and submits reports in a timely manner.

Communication/Patient Satisfaction:

1.    Leads by example to provide service excellence by communicating in a cooperative, positive and professional manner.
2.    Displays courtesy toward customers by introducing self and addressing customer by name.
3.    Meets customers’ expectation by listening, seeking solutions to potential and actual problems, and demonstrating sensitivity and awareness of others.
4.    Follows through to ensure that established expectations are satisfied; keep customers informed of progress.
5.    Works effectively and cooperatively in groups/teams to ensure quality patient care.
6.    Review monthly Press Ganey metrics and identify opportunities for improvement.
7.    Collaborate with Oncology Supportive Services to increase patient satisfaction.

1.    Assumes responsibility for self-improvement by attendance at in-service classes, staff meetings, and education related to personal growth and departmental needs.
2.    Attends all mandatory in-services and participates in appropriate professional organizations.
3.    Actively supports and participates in performance improvement activities.  Seeks/accepts training to learn new skills and maintain current competencies.
4.    Maintains and completes Personnel Development Record as per policy.
5.    Maintains ONS Chemotherapy Provider Card, CITI certification, RN license, and other required certifications.
6.    Demonstrates dependability/reliability by promptly reporting to work when scheduled.
7.    Other duties as assigned by the Department Director or department of nursing and assists other team members as appropriate.

Graduate from an accredited school of nursing, MSN, valid APRN license, BLS/ACLS required. Minimum of two (2) years of relevant advanced practice nursing experience to include a minimum of two ( 2) years of experience in treating hematology/oncology, acute care, or intensive care unit patients preferred
