HR Senior Benefits Manager – Remote

Reporting to the Benefits Director – Americas, the Senior Benefits Manager is responsible for managing U.S. benefits programs, including health, welfare, retirement, time off and other benefits consistent with the company’s overall objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the design, implementation and administration of Varian’s benefit plans and programs, including health, welfare, time-off, retirement, and other offerings.
  • Partner with Benefits Director on overall benefits strategic planning process, including evaluating benefit trends, and identifying new and innovative offerings. Develop and recommend new or modified plans and policies as needed.
  • Establish strong partnerships with Shared Services, Legal, Payroll, Finance and other internal stakeholders; lead cross-functional projects to implement changes or new offerings and streamline operations.
  • Manage reoccurring meetings with cross functional partners and third-party vendors focusing on training, issue resolution and enhancements.
  • Manage annual open enrollment process; prepare benefits communications materials, plan and execute benefits fairs as needed and conduct employee meetings.
  • Develop and implement communication strategies to ensure effective promotion and understanding of benefit offerings to new and existing employees, candidates, and family members.
  • Proactively identify process improvement opportunities and address needed corrections.
  • Works with insurance carriers and benefits enrollment system administrator to resolve issues regarding claims and eligibility.
  • Manage relationships with benefit broker, advisors, carriers and vendors, ensuring high performance standards are met or exceeded.
  • Provide guidance to Benefits team, Shared Services, and third-party vendors on benefits administration responsibilities. Provide outstanding customer service for escalated employee benefit inquiries and issues.
  • Ensure compliance with DOL, ERISA, ACA, HIPAA, SARs, Form 5500 filings, non-discrimination testing, etc.
  • Periodically audit benefit plans and deductions to ensure accuracy of plan administration.
  • Partner with Benefits Director on the management and communication of benefit programs in Canada and South America as needed.

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent and 8+ years relevant experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S., state, and federal laws pertaining to benefits and 401(k) plans.
  • Familiarity with HRIS Systems (Workday) and benefits systems a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience developing effective employee communications.
  • Deep understanding of benefits best practices, current trends, and market benchmarks.
  • Ability to learn quickly and think independently, especially in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional critical thinking and a desire to drive improvement.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Excel, Word, Outlook & Power Point.
  • Proactive, collaborative team member with excellent attention to detail and strong sense of urgency and follow through.
