Communications Lead Engineer – Remote

The Communications Lead Engineer provides lead support for the integration, implementation, testing, and deployment of data communications systems as applied in train control systems. This position shall have a primary assignment on the Caltrain Positive Train Control (PTC) system and reports to the Wabtec Project Management Team.


  • Lead the Comms Segment, whose responsibilities include architect, engineer and design systems.
  • Lead the effort to integrate the Comms Segment with the other PTC System Segments.
  • Develop technical specifications.
  • Respond to RFIs.
  • Plan the Comm Team’s activities within the schedule constraints.
  • Present the Comms Segment status at weekly internal and customer meetings.
  • Participate in conference calls to discuss products and action plans.
  • Prepare high-quality written reports and presentations.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget and meet Xorail standards of quality.


  • Railroad and PTC Systems experience strongly preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience in leading communications systems design, installation, configuration and maintenance
  • Experienced designer with expertise in the following sub-systems – networking (Ethernet, FO, routers, outside plant, inside plant), RF, Cellular, CCTV, SCADA, and PA/VMS.
  • Hands-on experience engineering and designing such sub-systems including troubleshooting, testing, stress testing and integrating, strongly preferred.
  • Preference for field experience and desk design experience
  • Preference for individuals experienced in full lifecycle of a project from preliminary design, final design to field test and commissioning.
  • Good thinking capability and work well with customers.   Works well and cooperatively in a team environment.  Strong oral communication skills; ability to articulate clearly and concisely
  • Engineering degree, preferred.

Working Conditions: Remote work with some travel to site locations throughout the U.S and abroad. Must be able to access construction sites, work along railways, and access railway tunnels and bridges.
